Choosing a Real Estate Lawyer

May 28, 2021

Finding a good Real Estate lawyer, especially one who doesn’t give you a lengthy to-do list, can make all the difference during an already busy time in your life. We wanted to eliminate some of the guesswork by taking a moment to highlight some of the key things you should look for in a Real Estate lawyer.

First and foremost, it’s important to choose a lawyer that has experience in Real Estate law. While your friend who practices corporate law might be an excellent lawyer, that doesn’t necessarily mean they understand the ins-and-outs of Real Estate law. It is also a good idea to find a Real Estate lawyer that is up front about their fees, so there aren’t any surprises down the road. We always recommend booking an initial consultation with a lawyer to find out if they are experienced, trustworthy, and a good fit for you.

Here are a few handy examples of questions you may want to ask when you meet with a Real Estate lawyer:

  • How long have they been practicing Real Estate law?
  • Are they knowledgeable in Alberta Real Estate law? The laws vary between provinces, so it’s best to find a Real Estate lawyer with more area-specific knowledge.
  • Do they bill by the hour or offer a flat rate for their services? What other costs are involved?

These are just a few ideas to get you started— don’t hesitate to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something, and be sure to ask lots of questions. It’s also worth checking out the firm’s reviews online to see what others have to say.

IMPORTANT! If you agree to an insurance company’s settlement offer, you give up your legal right to pursue a personal injury claim. It is best to assess the full extent of your injuries and how they will affect your life before you accept an offer. Please note that you have a maximum of two years from the date of the accident to file an injury claim in Alberta.
