It’s a crazy job market out there and we know how difficult and discouraging it can be to not land the job interview you’d hoped for. Here at Litco Law, our People and Culture team spend hours each week reviewing hundreds of applications for our open opportunities and we come across many candidates that are SO close but just not quite there. We want to help you learn the simplest ways to polish your application and emphasize the importance of having a positive attitude towards your job search. Keep in mind that every employer is looking for something different, so what’s important to us may not be what is important to other employers. With that in mind, the following tips are meant to highlight the key things that will help polish your application for any role or company you apply to.
ARE YOU APPLYING FOR THE RIGHT ROLE?
It can be tempting to just apply to any and all job opportunities when searching for employment but, being more intentional with your applications and tailoring it towards the roles you really want and are qualified for, will pay off in the long run. Ask yourself, “does the job description align with my experience and interests?” Use the job description as a cheat sheet for what things you need to highlight in your application. If you don’t have the exact experience required for the job, talk about how your skills may be transferable or why you should still be considered for the role. Speak to accomplishments that align directly with the requirements asked for and let us know why we should pick you.
PERSONALIZE YOUR COVER LETTER
First of all, make sure you’re attaching the right cover letter. You’d be surprised at the number of applications we receive that are addressed to the wrong company or the wrong role. If you aren’t addressing the company or role already, start there. Show that you’ve done some research into the company you’re applying for and express in your application how you align with what you’ve learned. This is an opportunity to tell us a bit more about yourself and stand out from other candidates. Don’t be afraid to show some personality! Share something interesting that isn’t on your resume and keep it concise.
FORMAT YOUR RESUME AND COVER LETTER THE SAME
Your resume and cover letter should be easy on the eyes. At first glance, it should appear clean and consistent. Having the same format between your resume and cover letter shows great attention to detail and professionalism in your application’s appearance. Be sure that the information included is only what is needed, and no more. When listing your experience in your resume, list it in order of recency or relevance, and don’t forget to include dates!
GRAMMAR! GRAMMAR! GRAMMAR!
If you only take away one thing from this blog, it should be the importance of good grammar! With handy tools like automatic spell check and online resources, such as Grammarly, there should be no reason to submit an application with errors. Simple actions, like reading your application out loud, will help you catch those pesky little mistakes and ensure it reads with the tone you want to express. Have someone review it for you as a triple check of your work. We all make mistakes, and recruiters understand that, but grammatical errors can be a red flag for lack of care or attention to detail. Putting in the extra effort to ensure your application is submitted with minimal errors goes a long way. Remember, this is the first impression a recruiter will have of your skills.
BE MINDFUL OF YOUR ONLINE PRESENCE
Do you have a LinkedIn profile? Recruiters often use LinkedIn to find the specific talent they’re looking for as online networking becomes more relevant in today’s world. Have your profile set up with a professional photo and be sure that your experience is up to date. Think about your social media platforms as well. Google yourself and see what type of information is out there for people to find. Be mindful of your online presence and the message it may send to recruiters.
PATIENCE & PERSISTENCE = A POSITIVE OUTCOME!
It’s easy to feel discouraged or start to see all recruiters as the enemy when you’re struggling to find a job. Be kind to yourself and remember that it’s a process. At Litco Law, one of our core values is kindness, and this includes showing kindness to ourselves! Believe that what is meant for you will make way for you and don’t let the difficulties of the job market bring you down. Continue to put in the work, stay positive, and in due time you’ll land the job that’s meant for you!
