Meet Josh Jackson

Jun 20, 2023

What does a lawyer do in his spare time? Meet Josh, our Real Estate and Wills & Estates lawyer who likes to hike, travel, and go dragon boat racing when he’s off the clock. To learn more about Josh’s personal and professional background, hobbies, and top real estate tips, keep reading!

Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in St. Paul, Alberta, a small town northeast of Edmonton, where I learned the value of community, hard work, and honesty.

What are your favourite hobbies? When I’m not working, I like to spend my time outdoors. Hiking and camping in Alberta’s backcountry are some of my favourite activities, as they allow me to explore new places, challenge myself physically and mentally, and reconnect with nature. I also enjoy dragon boat racing down the North Saskatchewan River. It’s a fun and exhilarating sport that requires teamwork, coordination, and endurance.

What’s one thing on your bucket list? One of my dreams is to hike the Great Divide Trail, which spans 1,130 km along the Canadian Rockies from Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta to Kakwa Lake Provincial Park in British Columbia. It’s one of the most scenic and challenging trails in North America, crossing through five national parks and seven provincial parks. It would be an amazing adventure and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What’s your pump-up song? My go-to song to get me moving is “Tornado 87” by The Rural Alberta Advantage.

What is your favourite book? “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy. It’s a post-apocalyptic novel that follows a father and his son as they journey across a barren and dangerous landscape in search of safety and hope. It’s a moving story that explores themes of survival, love, and faith.

What’s your go-to Starbucks order? I definitely love my coffee. When at Starbucks, I usually go for a cappuccino.

Last but not least, what is your top real estate tip? Find out if your real estate lawyer charges a flat rate fee or if they bill by the hour and whether disbursements are included in their quote. Many firms charge standard disbursements in addition to their legal fee. So, while a firm’s base fee might seem like a great deal at first glance, that number can quickly increase if your lawyer bills by the hour or if disbursements are in addition. For all real estate transactions at Litco Law, you’ll pay a flat rate fee. The base fee we charge for the purchase or sale of a home includes the cost of standard disbursements.

Josh also sits on the Indigenous Advisory Committee for the Law Society of Alberta where he works with other committee members to advance the goals of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action.
