New day, new episode of Behind the Mask! It’s time to learn more about the individuals that make up Litco Law’s caring legal team. Today, we’re asking Personal Injury lawyer Colin about his dream superpowers, his biggest obstacles, and why he switched careers to pursue his passion for helping people. Keep reading and watch the video to get to know Colin!

What makes Litco Law a caring team?

I believe that Litco Law’s team is a tremendously caring team because we are focused exclusively on our clients. We say, “What can we do? What can we not do? Don’t miss their calls or emails, always get back to the clients.” These are important and critical things for all of our clients, particularly when an individual is going through one of the hardest times in their life. So we help them with that transition, and I think we do it with a certain tenacity that is of great importance to our clients. I think that our clients respond to that.

What has been your biggest obstacle?

I went to law school a bit later in life. I went to law school at age 29, so I pivoted out of a career in academia into law school when all my other friends had their careers— they were established, they were doing things, and that was a hard decision to make after spending my twenties on one aspect of what I thought was going to be my career. Changing speeds and making the sacrifice to go back to school in my late twenties, early thirties, and starting my career again—I started articling at 32— it was a little trickier, but it all worked out.

Who inspires you?

People that take very difficult positions on things, seeing obstacles as perhaps even insurmountable, and still overcoming them and affecting change where no one else could. These are people like Mahatma Gandhi with the satyagraha movement in India, Martin Luther King with his civil rights movement, or Mohammed Ali with his conscientious objections. Those are people that inspire me.

Tell us something that isn’t on your resume.

I was in the academic study of Buddhism and I have a Masters in South Asian studies from the University of Toronto. I had intended to do my Doctorate—I didn’t want to pursue that afterward, but I suspect that few know that in terms of what my career is now.

Why do you work in Personal Injury law?

I am practicing the area of law I practice now because, as many lawyers do, I found myself in an area of law that wasn’t what I started off doing. For the first twelve years of my career I worked for insurance companies, and that wasn’t really what I wanted to do. It was fine in the sense that I enjoyed the work and enjoyed the people I was working with—the adjusters and whatnot—but in terms of what I really wanted to do, I wanted to get back to helping people.

Rapid Fire Round

Coffee or tea? Coffee in the morning, tea at night.

Favourite ice cream place in Calgary? My Favorite Ice Cream Shoppe in Garrison.

What superpower would you have? Gotta be time travel.

One thing you’re bad at? I’d probably say time management. As a lawyer… probably not the best thing to say out loud, ha.

What instrument would you play? Wouldn’t mind being able to play the harmonica.

What language would you speak? Mandarin, Cantonese, or maybe even Japanese.

Who would play you in a movie? George Clooney or Jon Hamm… but it’d probably be Steve Buscemi.

What is your favourite holiday? I like the Christmas break. A lot of family comes together, I like things like that.
