What are general damages?
Todd: Basically, what a case is worth is different for every person… so it depends upon duration and the severity of a person’s injury. One of the main heads of damages in a case is general damages— or what lawyers call general damages— which is the fancy legal term for compensation for pain, suffering and loss of amenities of life.
So in other words, general damages encompasses the things that you’re not able to do because of the accident, such as working, playing with your children, cleaning your house, or taking care of your general wellbeing. It’s your standard of living and how you live your daily life. General damages are calculated based on how long your injury lasts, how severe it is, and what past legal cases say your case is worth.
