5 Things You Can Do to Support Your Injury Claim

If you’ve been injured in an accident, getting fair compensation for your injuries is an important piece of the puzzle in helping you get back to better. A Personal Injury claim may be your best option to ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve for things like medical bills, inability to work, pain and suffering, and more. While your lawyer will advocate for you and take care of the legal work, there are several things you can do to support the process.

  1. Get medical treatment (right away) – The first and most important thing is your health. Even if you think you feel fine, it may take hours, days, or even weeks to know the full extent of your injuries. The longer you wait to see your doctor, the more difficult it can be to prove that your injuries are a direct result of the accident. Follow the advice of your doctor and any other medical specialists that are part of your recovery. Not only will these treatment providers get you back on the road to better health, they will write reports and take notes that are key in getting you the compensation you deserve.
  2. Evidence is everything –As we like to say, a picture (or video) is worth a thousand words. Evidence is the foundation that every Personal Injury case is built on. Photos, camera footage, eyewitness accounts, and medical reports are just a few examples of important pieces of evidence for proving your claim. In many cases, this information is collected after the fact by your Personal Injury lawyer. As time passes, it can be harder to track down witnesses, locate camera footage, and other key pieces of evidence may be lost… so the sooner you get in touch with an injury lawyer, the better.
  3. Don’t wait too long to make a claim– In Alberta, you have up to two years from the date of an accident to make a claim in court, or your right to do so is lost forever. But it’s important not to wait as there may be other important deadlines or circumstances, that may affect the deadline or your claim. If you delay, it can also be more difficult to gather eyewitness accounts, video footage, skid marks on the road, and more.
  4. Be careful about what you share on social media– Without you realizing it, your latest post on Instagram could be harming your claim. While your claim is ongoing, we strongly advise that you make all your social media accounts private. As a general rule, you should never post details related to your claim. And when in doubt, don’t do it for the ‘gram.
  5. Find a qualified lawyer– While your old college buddy might be an excellent corporate lawyer, it doesn’t mean they are knowledgeable in Personal Injury law. It’s important to find an injury lawyer who is knowledgeable in their field, takes the time to listen, and will guide you through the process in a way that doesn’t add to your stress. Read reviews online and don’t be afraid to contact a few lawyers in your city to find the right fit for you.
