What Is SEF-44 and Why Is It Important?

Sep 27, 2021

Do you really know what your insurance covers if you get into an accident? Like many other drivers out there, you may be under the assumption that if you get injured in an accident caused by someone else, you’ll be covered by their insurance for any injuries. That is not always the case. In fact, there are instances where you may not be covered by the other person’s liability insurance, including cases where:

  • The person who injures you has no liability insurance;
  • The person who injures you has less liability insurance than your claim is worth; or
  • The person who injures you flees the scene in a hit-and-run.

What Does SEF 44 Do?

SEF 44 Family Protection Coverage may protect you and your family in the event that any of you are injured in a Motor Vehicle Accident where you are not at fault (or only partially at fault). In other words, you’ll be protected regardless of whether the other party who caused the accident was uninsured, underinsured, or if the accident was a hit-and-run.

How Much Will Family Protection Coverage Cost Me?

If you decide that you want to add SEF 44 Family Protection Coverage to your insurance policy, it is often very affordable to do so. To find out the exact cost, call your insurance broker and ask for a quote to add SEF 44 to your policy.

How Much Family Protection Coverage Will I have?

We suggest considering increasing your third-party liability coverage to $2,000,000, not only to protect you and your family in the event of an accident but to also ensure you have higher Family Protection Coverage. The cost difference between $1MM and $2MM liability coverage is often minimal, and worth the peace of mind.

SEF 44 May Offer Protection for Travelers

Many places outside of Alberta have considerably lower liability insurance requirements. To give you an idea, in some US States, mandatory liability coverage is as low as $25,000 USD. If you plan to drive outside of the province of Alberta, it’s a good idea to talk to your insurance broker about SEF 44 Family Protection Coverage. There are a few provinces and states that have different rules around no-fault insurance. Be sure to talk to your broker to find out what type of coverage is right for you.

We encourage you to speak to your broker regarding SEF 44 coverage. It is optional, but many insurance brokers recommend it, so you may already be covered. The easiest way to find out if you have SEF 44 coverage is to call your insurance broker and ask. If you would like to learn more about how the SEF44 works, we’ve written about it here

    IMPORTANT! If you agree to an insurance company’s settlement offer, you give up your legal right to pursue a personal injury claim. It is best to assess the full extent of your injuries and how they will affect your life before you accept an offer. Please note that you have a maximum of two years from the date of the accident to file an injury claim in Alberta.
