U of C Law Negotiation Club

Mar 3, 2017

Calgary, AB – Litwiniuk & Company hosted the launch event for the University of Calgary Law Negotiation Club on March 2 at the firm’s Britannia Crossing office. Over 40 club members participated in a mock negotiation between two fictitious parties, one a property developer and the other a community association. Students separated into teams of two, and each team was assigned a role to play and set of facts. After 30 minutes of preparation, teams had 45 minutes to hammer out a deal in one of Litwiniuk’s boardrooms, adding to the realism of the situation. Litwiniuk lawyers were on hand to observe, coach, and lend support to participants.

The Negotiation Club, which consists of students from all years of the university’s law school, provides unique opportunities for future lawyers to learn essential negotiation skills. The idea for the event stemmed from a meeting in late 2016 between Fred Litwiniuk, the firm’s Director of Business Development and Marketing, and Club Executives Laura McPhee and Chad Haggerty. Seed planted, Club Executives Michael Henry and Victoria Schmidt met with Litwiniuk to bring it to life. Litwiniuk administrative team members Rhiannon Lewis and Stephanie Scott planned the event with Fred Litwiniuk, and recruited many other volunteers from the Litwiniuk team to welcome the students.

“The Executive was fantastic to work with,” says Fred Litwiniuk. “Everyone was so organized; it made our job of planning the event so much easier. Stephanie, Rhiannon, and all of the volunteers from our team worked so hard to put this event together, and the result was incredible. I don’t see how it could have been better.”

Following the negotiation, there was a catered reception in the Litwiniuk team café and a feedback session, during which students had the opportunity to give and receive feedback, and compare results. An expert panel comprised of Litwiniuk Lawyers Michelle Tong, Geoffrey Brisbin, Clint Suntjens, and Fred Litwiniuk took questions from students on the finer points of negotiation, and offered valuable, practical tips for success.

Litwiniuk & Company has committed to supporting the Club in the long-term, both financially and educationally. The firm has shown a commitment to student success in the past through initiatives such as its SAIT School of Business Community and Culture Award and its Personal Injury Scholarship. This partnership, however, is new territory for the firm.

“We wanted an opportunity to support students in a unique way, and partnering with the Negotiation Club has given that to us,” says Fred Litwiniuk. “It’s easy to donate money, sponsor events, and put your name on things, but we are interested in doing more for students. We have deep and broad strengths in negotiation at our firm, and by being generous with our time and knowledge, I think we can offer much more value than through sponsorship alone.”

“I am so impressed with the caliber of the students at U of C generally, but the Executive members have blown me away. They created this incredible club from scratch and in a very short time, it has become a massive success. We hope to be a part of it for years to come, and we can’t wait to host the next event.”
