For any business to be successful, excellent customer service is essential. And looking after your community and neighbours is just as important. Litwiniuk & Company, as a Calgary-based, family-run law firm, believes companies must exist for a higher purpose than making money – and raising money to help their community, that’s something they can get behind. As a platinum sponsor of the Calgary TELUS Ride for Dad for the past six years, they’ve helped raise over $500,000 for the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre and prostate cancer research.
“We have a close family connection to the disease as it’s affected several of our friends and family members,” says Todd Litwiniuk, Managing Partner of Litwiniuk & Company. “Our firm of injury lawyers have worked in the community for over 40 years and we wanted to support the riders who do their own fundraising.”
Because of Litwiniuk & Company’s sponsorship, one hundred percent of the money raised by the riders goes towards prostate cancer research and awareness. As you can imagine, organizing a ride of this size is a huge undertaking. To be able to run a ride where every dollar raised by participants goes directly into research and awareness programs in our local area is a testament to the companies who sponsor the event.
Calgary TELUS Ride for Dad and the Man Van™
One of the main goals of the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation and the TELUS Ride For Dad is to award research grants for new and innovative breakthrough science; research that can make a difference for people diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Once the money is raised,
how are the grants awarded?
Invitations go out each fall to scientists, researchers and oncologists, to submit applications for the funds. These applications are then vetted and approved by a team of specialists at the national level. If multiple applications are approved for a given area, the local chapter provides input into the research they would prefer to support.
A second goal is to raise awareness. The Calgary Chapter of the TELUS Ride For Dad is proud to be a named sponsor of the Man Van™, a mobile testing vehicle. Since 2012 our Chapter has raised awareness by bringing the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test to thousands of men in Calgary.
Over 2,300 men have been tested during the two main annual Calgary events – the spring Motorcycle Show and the BRZ Stampede Breakfast, with more events being added each year.
“The TELUS Ride For Dad have held Man Van clinics since 2014, in the underserved area of south east Calgary,” says Ron Parkinson, Co-Chair of the Calgary Chapter. “Last year the clinic was expanded from PSA-only testing for men 40 years old and older, to a “Know Your Numbers” clinic. We added blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index tests for men 18 years old and up. In the first year 81% of the men had never been tested before; by 2017 that was only 36%. We believe this is directly related to the awareness driven by Litwiniuk & Company and their support of the Ride For Dad.”
If you’re a rider and want to get involved in the 2018 TELUS Ride for Dad, it’s being held on Saturday, June 16. Suit up and come join the fun while raising money for an important cause!
