Legal Services Lead Ben McKiernan

Apr 20, 2021

We’re back in action with another edition of Behind the Mask! Today, we’re featuring Legal Services Team Lead Ben, AKA our secret pro snowboarder. We get the lowdown on why he thinks the Litco Law team is unique, his love for unsolicited ‘Wonderwall’ performances, and who would play him in a movie. Keep reading and watch the video to get to know Ben!

Why do you work in legal services?

This is something I’ve always been interested in. My original goal was to get into policing of some kind or law enforcement of some kind. It’s still potentially a possibility, but for right now I’m enjoying my time here!

What makes the Litco Law team special?

This is a great question, it’s one I get a lot when I’m doing interviews and things like that! My go-to answer is always that— I tell people that in every group, whether it’s a family or a group of friends or whatever it may be— there’s always one person who is the go-to person. They’re the person who is setting up a quiz night over quarantine, or they’re the person who’s, you know, having everyone over for a barbeque, or organizing a kids’ get-together or whatever it may be. When I do those interviews, I tell people that every single person who works here is that person in their group of friends. And it really is a rewarding experience to come to work and to work with a group of people who are all willing to get stuck in, all willing to pull their weight, and are all pulling in the same direction as well.

Tell us something that isn’t on your resume.

Hahaha! I like this question, there’s a lot of stuff about me that isn’t on my resume. I’m gonna go with— I was thinking about two different answers for that so I’ll give you both— the first is that I did a lot of snowboarding when I was a little bit younger, a slightly younger man than I am now. I had a number of different sponsorships from some skate and snowboard shops in Calgary, some clothing companies and some different things like that. I’ve been involved in a couple of different full length movie projects, snowboarding movie projects, things like that. So yeah, there’s that… and then the other thing is that I can juggle!

What is your favourite Litco Law book club pick?

My favourite one that I’ve read so far is a book called ‘Shut Up and Listen!’ It’s sort of a bit of a no nonsense, hard-headed look at business and the way that, you know, it’s just one of many ways that people want to run their business… but it resonated with me. I liked some of the approaches— not necessarily all of ’em— but yeah, if I was choosing one book from the book club so far it would be ‘Shut Up and Listen!’

What’s your favourite place you’ve traveled to?

My favourite place that I ever traveled to far away is Australia, on the eastern coast of Australia. I did a road trip for about four or five weeks up the coast, and it was an incredible experience, it really was. It was fantastic, I loved it! The next place that I’m going to as soon as I can? This is going to be a bit of a boring answer, but laying on a beach with absolutely nothing to do for a week sounds like a special treat at the moment. So, I think that’ll be the next one!

Rapid Fire Round

Coffee or tea? Coffee. Every. Single. Time.

Favourite ice cream place in Calgary? I will go with Made by Marcus.

What superpower would you have? Teleportation, without a doubt.

One thing you’re bad at? Anything to do with computers.

What instrument would you play? The guitar, so I could play Wonderwall around the campfire.

What language would you speak? Spanish.

Favourite movie? Anything by Quentin Tarantino.

Who would play you in a movie of your life? Oh dear. Jude Law? I don’t know.

Favourite place to visit in Canada? Ohhh, Vancouver BC!

Bonus question: what kind of animal would you be?

This is a very serious question, and I actually took it so seriously that I took an online quiz last night to find out what my animal was. Unfortunately, they came back with a butterfly. I don’t know if that is accurate or not… I scrapped the result to that quiz. I don’t want to go with butterfly, and so I am going to go with— I was thinking about it, I’m gonna go with an otter or a sea otter because I like to have fun. I like, you know, swimming around and hanging out with friends and all that kind of thing, but when it comes down to it, they’re good hunters, they’re good at getting stuff done, and then, you know, they’re able to survive on their own so there you go!
